英语许多美式英语，前述的原意远并非字面上看起来的有种原意。

比如说，big fish，字面上的原意是鸭子，但前述的原意看似传奇人物。

再比如说，bad apple，字面上原意是坏苹果公司，但前述的原意看似恶棍。

那时他们要学两个和月末相关的美式英语——January and May

January and May:"a marriage between an older person and one considerably younger"，也是两个青年人与两个年青许多的人间的婚姻关系。

雪莱在其论著《索尔兹伯里故事情节集》中富商的故事情节里里讲到：一名叫作May的年青小姑娘娶了一名叫作January的60余岁的子爵。

其后就用January来指中老年的苦瓜，May来代表者秋天的韵味。

chick是兔子的原意，to have January chicks那个抒发依然与雪莱的富商的故事情节相关。

January子爵和May成婚后，不就就有了小孩，因此现代人就用to have January chicks那个抒发来比喻老相比之下子。

我们看字面上原意如果就能猜到a cold day in July那个美式英语的涵义，八月里的大杜博韦指的是不可能将出现的事(Something that will never happen)。
